HEAD OF PRIMARY SCHOOL WELCOME
On behalf of the Board of Directors and myself, welcome to the primary department of MISY Mandalay Campus. Whether you’re a prospective parent or a long standing family member of one of our pupils, I hope you find our website interesting and informative.
Our children and staff come from wonderfully diverse backgrounds and cultures, which helps prepare our learners for life in 21st century multicultural Myanmar and the wider world. Our staff are both experienced and enthusiastic and go the extra mile to ensure the children in their care receive the best education possible.
The primary team strives to both engage and inspire all of our pupils so that they become fully rounded young people who, when they leave us at the end of Year 6 to enter the secondary section, are more than ready to confidently take the next steps in their educational adventure.
Our provision not only aims to deliver an exciting curriculum, tailored to the needs of every child in school but also provide our children with opportunities and experiences beyond that of the normal timetable. We feel we have woven into our provision essential learning experiences across specialist subjects and extra curricular activities.
Being the Head of Primary at MISY Mandalay is a fantastic job and I am proud to serve such a wonderful and supportive school community.

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) (Nursery and Reception)
At MISY our Nursery classes start for students aged 3 and Reception classes for 4 year olds. Each class is taught by an experienced expatriate teacher supported by a well qualified assistant teacher.
Nursery and Reception classes begin at 8:45 am to 2:30 pm.
Our Aims
At MISY Nursery and Reception we follow The Early Years Foundation Stage English Curriculum. We work closely together to provide a caring and stimulating learning environment and to meet the needs of each individual child. We want the children to enjoy their first experience of school life and enthusiastically begin their learning journey by providing;
- a secure and happy learning environment and promote positive relationships
- excellent foundations for learning that will go with them throughout school
- positive parent partnerships through good communication and joint learning opportunities
English National Curriculum
The English National Curriculum for the Early Years defines seven areas of learning and development in the EYFS. These seven areas are used to plan your child’s learning and activities.
- Communication and language
- Physical development
- Personal, social and emotional development
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the world
- Expressive arts and design
How We Teach
Children in the EYFS learn by playing "hands on" and exploring, being active, and through creative and critical thinking which takes place both indoors and outdoors. Our professional understanding of teaching enables us to make sure that the activities are suited to your child’s developmental state. The curriculum is designed for very young children, and is flexible so that we can follow your child's unique needs and interests.
"Learning by doing" is the motto, and there are a wide range of activities for the children to choose from. Learning opportunities and the use of resources are carefully planned to enable children to develop in a verity of ways.
Dynamic and regularly changing learning stations in the classroom may include:
- sand, water, dough, art, messy, puppet plays
- investigation, construction, maths
- reading, writing/mark making, listening, imaginative role play
- phonics lessons three times a week, starting from Reception
Specialist Teachers, Educational Trips, Celebrations
Early Years and Reception children also attend Music, Computer, Physical Education (PE) and Art classes, all taught by specialist teachers. Reception children begin their reading journey with phonic lessons three times a week, following the Jolly Phonics programme.
Nursery and Reception classes go on educational trips which are linked to their in-class learning, and join in school wide celebration such as International Day, cultural days, sports days and end of term performances.
Communication with Parents
We understand that it is vital for parents to be involved in their child's learning and regular communication is essential.
At the beginning of each year we invite parents to meet a 'meet the teachers' event where individual class teachers explain the routines and expectations of their class, this is also a chance for parents to ask questions about the school day. In order for you to get information about your child's progress we report to parents four times a year, this includes two student-teacher-parent conferences and two written reports.
We use Class Dojo (a safe electronic method of communication between teacher and parents) to send regular messages and photos to update you about what is happening in class. We send a newsletter to parents via Class Dojo at the beginning of each unit to keep you abreast of our learning. We hold regular coffee mornings to update you on new initiatives.
Campus Facilities
Our Mandalay Campus has big and bright classrooms all air-conditioned, equipped with computers, internet access and overhead projectors. The Early Years' classrooms have a specially designed nap area. There are specialist rooms for Music, Art and Computer lessons. We have a science laboratory, a library, a student canteen, an outdoor playground for very small children and a recreational area for older students, a multipurpose covered sport hall, a grass football field, small swimming pools and a waiting room for parents.

Computer, Music, Art, Physical Education (PE), Mandarin and Myanmar classes are taught by qualified specialist teachers for all year groups. Additionally, students have a library lesson and are encouraged to choose and take library books home each week.
Assessment
Students from Year 3 and above take a Progress Test to monitor their achievements against their peers in England. In Year 4 they additionally take the CAT 4 Test to analyse their way of learning, their strengths and weaknesses. They then receive a detailed report about how they can learn to reach their potential.
Students in KS2 sit external standardised assessments so that a comparison with other British schools can be undertaken. This provides assurances that our students are making expected academic progress inline with British schools.
English as an Additional Language (EAL)
The process of acquiring English is supported by the English as an Additional Language (EAL) Department. Students who arrive at MISY with limited English are required to take EAL support classes with qualified and dedicated English specialists as part of their school day. As their level of English improves, these students may exit the EAL programme and integrate fully into main stream classes. We assess their English level using WIDA Tests.
EAL classes have to be paid in addition to other school fees.
After-School Activities, Sports, Educational Trips and Celebrations
We run a programme of exciting after school activities such as STEM (Science, Technology, English and Mathematics) and sports coaching, football and others which students are encouraged to sign up for each term.
All classes go on educational trips linked to their in-class learning, and join school wide celebrations such as Christmas Show, International Day, Art Week, cultural days, sports days, assemblies, award ceremonies and end of term performances.
